US Stock Market Opening and Closing Times

When you are investing and trading it is important to know what time the stock market is open and closed. There are two Major Exchanges in the U.S. are the Nasdaq and The New York Stock Exchange. The Nasdaq and NYSE both have the same trading hours. The normal trading hours Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. ET – 4:00 p.m. ET. In the U.S. you can trade before the market opens and after the markets open. There are pre-market trading hours from 4:00 a.m. ET – 9:30 a.m. ET. The after-market trading hours are from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Trading volume in the extended hours is usually less than during normal market hours. When you make trades during extended hours trading stocks can have less liquidity and volume than during normal trading hours. An earnings report or news for a company can affect the stock price and make a stock volatile during extended hours.

The NYSE and Nasdaq are closed on the following holidays including:

  • New Years Day
  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Presidents Day
  • Good Friday
  • Memorial Day
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day

The U.S. Stock exchanges close early on certain days during the year around these holidays if they fall on a weekday. The day before Independence Day, the Friday after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Eve the markets close early. The hours are 9:30 a.m. ET – 1 p.m. ET for these shorted days.

Stock Market Opening Times Around The World

It is good to know the trading hour of stock markets around the world if you have international investments. The major stock exchanges around the world have open at different times. These are the global stock market opening and closing times at their local times.

  • Toronto Stock Exchange in Canada: 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 a.m.
  • Tokyo Stock Exchange in Japan: 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., with an hour lunch break of no trading from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
  • Hong Kong Stock Exchange in Hong Kong: 9:15 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., with an hour lunch break of no trading from noon – 1:00 p.m.
  • London Stock Exchange in the United Kingdom: 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
  • Shanghai Stock Exchange in China: 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., with an lunch break of no trading from 11:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
  • Australian Stock Exchange in Australia: 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Euronext Stock Exchange in Amsterdam: 9:00 a.m. – 5:40 p.m.
  • Bombay Stock Exchange in India: 9:15 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
